Volkswagen has announced the end of all factory motorsport programs. The staff of Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH will be integrated into Volkswagen AG.
Volkswagen announced the end of the brand's motorsport activities and will focus all available resources on the transition to the era of electric vehicles. The management of the company thanked the Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH team for numerous victories, titles and records around the world.
Today, the Volkswagen Motorsport GmbH division employs 169 people, all of whom will be offered to work in other directions within the Volkswagen AG concern. Chief Brand Development Officer Frank Welch said the employee experience, including the experience gained from the all-electric ID.R prototype project, will help the automaker bring new efficient models of the ID family to market.
Volkswagen also noted that the supply of spare parts for the rally Polo GTI R5 and Golf GTI TCR is guaranteed in the long term. As for the customer Polo GTI R5, production will end at the end of 2020.
The brand's most significant achievements include three victories in the Dakar Rally with Race Touareg (2009-2011), four World Rally Championship titles with Polo R WRC (2013-2016), two TCR International titles with Golf GTI (2016, 2017) and three world rallycross titles with Polo (2017, 2018, 2020).
In 2018, Volkswagen Motorsport switched to electric mobility with its ID.R. car, which set five international records, including an all-time record at Pikes Peak (USA), as well as an electric record at the Nurburgring and Tianmen Mountain in China.
