The explosion was so strong that the windows shook hundreds of kilometers around from the site of the meteorite explosion
On Saturday afternoon, over the southern part of the UK, near the county of Somerset, a large and very rare meteorite flew and exploded. This happened at approximately 14.56 local time. The explosion of the meteorite was heard by many and this sound was even caught on the video of several surveillance cameras, but the meteorite itself was noted only in a few photos.
Experts say that the meteorite that exploded over England belongs to a very rare class of fireballs, whose structure glows with a bright, white light when it enters the Earth's atmosphere.
Fireballs are considered to be large and very bright meteorites that can be seen in the daytime. Most often, the brightness of such objects is comparable to the brightness of the moon or even the sun. The cars are also distinguished by the presence of a bright tail from dust and ionized gas.
In the beginning, no one understood what the explosion was connected with, the British Ministry of Defense denied its involvement, there were no tests or exercises on this day. The military also could not offer any adequate version, since this object was not seen on their radars.
Wil Gaither, an astronomer and BBC science writer, was the first to suggest that the explosion was related to a space object, as a similar event had already occurred in February this year, when a large matearite exploded over London at night.
Experts say that Saturday's meteorite flew at a speed higher than the speed of sound, it was 10-15 meters in diameter.
The British Geological Survey asks all witnesses who find black stone fragments to pass them to specialists for research.
